At KUST, our whale shark ceramic lamps are some of the most recognizable pieces in the studio — sculptural, atmospheric, and deeply inspired by marine life. We currently create around four different whale shark lamp designs, each with its own silhouette, surface rhythm, and character, while all remaining part of our larger world of handmade ceramic lighting and ocean-inspired ceramic art.
Each ceramic whale shark lamp is made using a combination of clay casting and handmade finishing. This process allows us to build consistent sculptural foundations while preserving the individuality of every piece through hand refinement, detailing, carving, and surface work. Because of this, no two lamps feel exactly the same — each one carries its own personality, texture, and handmade presence.
A key part of these works is glazing. In our studio, we use an authorial glazing technique developed to achieve soft gradients, layered tones, and rich color textures across the ceramic surface. This approach helps us create depth, movement, and a living quality in the skin of each lamp, making every whale shark lamp feel more organic and expressive. Light passing through the perforations adds another layer to the work, turning the object into both marine life sculpture and functional ceramic lamp.

KUST is an artist-led ceramic studio in Kyiv, Ukraine, where we create handmade ceramic lamps, sculptures, figurines, and one-of-a-kind objects inspired by ocean life, culture, and storytelling. The whale shark lamps are part of our ongoing exploration of the sea through clay — transforming one of the ocean’s most fascinating creatures into unique ceramic home decor and collectible art.

Today, this work exists alongside another important part of my life. I am currently serving in the 3rd Army Corps of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and within the framework of my service I also develop ceramic products for fundraising to support the needs of the Corps. This gives my work an additional layer of meaning: alongside artistic production, ceramics also become a tool of support, resilience, and contribution.

Our whale shark ceramic lamps are created for ocean lovers, collectors, and those seeking unique handmade lighting, ceramic shark lamps, ocean-inspired decor, and sculptural objects with strong artistic presence. They are a way of bringing the mystery, beauty, and quiet power of marine life into an interior — through clay, light, and handcraft.
